The Tasmanian Trotting Club History

The Tasmanian Trotting Club was formed in 1979 following the merger of the Southern Tasmanian Trotting Association and the Hobart Metropolitan Trotting Club. On Thursday 24 May 1979 the Inaugural Committee Meeting of the Tasmanian Trotting Club was held at the Royal Showgrounds.

Inaugural Committee Members

Charlie Aiken, Peter Cooley, Don Cornish, Ken Donovan, Chris Hallam, Bill Lester, Ron Walsh, Charlie Williams and Dr Peter Pitt.

Much of the club’s long and distinguished history comes from this era, including the first Inter Dominion series held in Tasmania in 1981 which was won by Western Australian Champion San Simeon. In 2006 our club was relocated to our current tri-code facility located on Goodwood Road, Elwick, but racing commenced in 2005.

He is extremely passionate about our club and the future of Harness racing in Tasmania. John is well supported by Office Manager Michelle Collis, who also works in our Race Day office at most race meetings. TTC governance is overseen by a Committee which boasts a wealth of experience at both local and national levels.

  • President: Phillip Young
  • Vice President: Stephen Devereux
  • Treasurer: Mike Jones
  • Robin Free
  • Ian Blackburn
  • Pam McQuade
  • Kerry Barrett
  • Noel Salter
  • Tommy Simpson.

Our Operations

The TTC conduct approximately 32 race meetings each season. TTC race meetings are mostly Sunday Twilight with some Friday meetings throughout. All meetings are shown on Sky Channel and offer punters the opportunity to bet with either the TOTE or Bookmakers.

The public facilities and viewing from our outstanding complex offer guests everything required for a great night out at the track. The tiered section of the grandstand has tables of six with each table having access to its own individual television monitor. While the TTC encourage race goers to use these facilities at all of the race meetings, bookings may be necessary on some of our feature race meetings. The venue is warm and inviting during the winter months, and in summer there’s a balcony and outdoor viewing options and a huge expanse of lawn overlooking the magnificent Derwent River.

Our Club

The TTC are very much a family friendly club and encourage this at every race meeting. Across recent years the TTC have worked hard to encourage a resurgence in the interest of pony trots, which today sees many aspiring young Tasmanian reins-people competing regularly at our track. The TTC see these participants as vitally important to the future of the club and the sport. The upcoming runs between 23 October – 19 March.

The TTC have a number of feature races across the calendar, many with a proud and long history. However, the major feature racing begins in December and runs through until early January. The Tasmania Cup has become an icon of Tasmanian Harness racing and is fiercely contested. There is always a festive feel at these race meetings at this time of the year, with supporting events and entertainment held to make for a fun-filled occasion for all the family.

Sponsorship Opportunities

The TTC's sponsors are incredibly important to the club. The TTC strive to build mutually beneficial partnerships and can tailor sponsorship packages to align with most brands. The TTC welcome the opportunity to meet with any potential sponsor that would like to be promoted via harness racing and our club.

There are a number of opportunities for exposure including national exposure via Sky Channel’s national audience. The TTC would like to take this opportunity to thank our current sponsors for their continued support.
